H Street Neighborhood Information

H Street was one of the original street car lines in the District with 3.3 million riders at its peak. The first Sears Roebuck Store in the District was located on H Street Northeast. For decades, the H Street Corridor DC was the small business commercial heart of the neighborhood, with row houses spreading north and east to the District line. The majority of these small businesses was destroyed in the 1968 riots and H Street Corridor DC has struggled since. In 2002, the DC Office of Planning began a community-based effort to revitalize. Since the H Street Corridor DC is 1.5 miles long, the Strategic Plan divided the area into three areas: the Urban Living Area between 2nd and 7th Streets, the Central Retail District between 7th and 12th, and the Arts and Entertainment District between 12th and 15th.

In 2004, the Arts and Entertainment District began to come alive with the renovation of the Atlas Theatre into a dance and performance space. A black box theatre, the H Street Playhouse opened and live music arrived in the H Street Corridor DC at the Red and the Black, the Rock n Roll Hotel and the H Street Martini Lounge. New small businesses have begun to open in the Central Retail District and all through the neighborhood homes began to come alive. Look for progress to continue and for the H Street Corridor DC to continue to attract new businesses and home owners.
